While growing up during the latter stages of the Cold War, the Berlin Wall still separated East and West Germany. As a kid of the 1970s and teenager of the early 1980s, Communism was a clear threat to the Constitutional Republic I lived in. I had no deep understanding of Marxist ideology. I just knew the Soviets ran five-year plans, that their “elections” were decided long before any vote was cast, and that Khrushchev wanted to “bury” us. Nuclear war felt one crisis away—Cuban Missile Crisis, mutually assured destruction, bombers in the air 24/7, submarines on silent patrol.
